Breaking Free from Rigid Thinking

We all know someone (or maybe we are that someone) who likes things a certain way. The coffee mug has to be just right, the morning routine cannot be disrupted, or maybe the idea of a last-minute plan sends a cold chill down the spine. While we all have preferences, rigid thinking or behaviors can sometimes make life feel like an exhausting game of “stick to the script or else!”

But here’s the good news: flexibility can be learned, and therapy can help! If rigid thinking is getting in the way of happiness, relationships, or general well-being, there are ways to loosen up and enjoy life a little more—without losing the comfort of structure.

Why Does Rigid Thinking Happen?

Rigid thinking often develops as a way to create predictability and control in a world that can feel overwhelming. This is especially common for individuals with anxiety, OCD, autism, or perfectionistic tendencies. This thinking isn’t “bad”—it’s likely served a purpose, providing a sense of safety or order. The goal of therapy isn’t to erase structure but to build flexibility within it so life can be a little less stressful and a lot more enjoyable.

Therapy That Helps with Rigid Thinking

The right therapy approach can help turn rigidity into resilience. Here are a few techniques that work wonders:

1. Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT)

RO-DBT is an evidence-based therapy specifically designed for individuals who struggle with excessive self-control, perfectionism, and social rigidity. Unlike standard DBT, which helps those who struggle with emotional impulsivity, RO-DBT focuses on increasing openness, emotional expression, and social connection. It teaches playfulness and flexibility, helping individuals step outside their comfort zones in a safe and structured way. This approach has been particularly effective for those with chronic depression, anorexia nervosa, and obsessive-compulsive personality traits.

2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify unhelpful thought patterns and reframe them. If someone believes, “If I don’t follow my routine exactly, my whole day is ruined,” CBT challenges that belief and introduces small, manageable changes to prove that flexibility is possible (and even enjoyable!).

3. Exposure Therapy

For those who feel intense anxiety when things don’t go according to plan, exposure therapy offers a way to practice discomfort in a controlled way. This might look like taking a different route home or intentionally mixing up a daily schedule in small steps.

4. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps individuals recognize that thoughts are just thoughts—not rules to be obeyed. It teaches mindfulness and values-based living, helping people focus on what truly matters rather than getting stuck in rigid routines.

5. Playful Experimentation

Sometimes, the best way to challenge rigidity is through fun! In therapy, I might encourage clients to wear mismatched socks, order a surprise meal at a restaurant, or plan an afternoon with zero schedule. When we can laugh at small disruptions, they start to feel less scary.

The Joy of Flexibility

Finding flexibility isn’t about throwing structure out the window—it’s about making space for joy, spontaneity, and less stress. It’s about being able to pivot when needed and knowing that things will be okay even if they don’t go exactly as planned.

If rigidity has been making life feel like a never-ending rulebook, therapy can help loosen the grip—one small step at a time. And who knows? That unexpected adventure might just turn into the best day ever!
