How to Help Your Child with ADHD: A Practical Guide for Parents

By: Simrah Wasim, MA, LPC

Are you constantly wondering how to help your child with ADHD? Parenting a child with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) can be both rewarding and challenging. ADHD affects a child’s ability to focus, sit still, and control impulses, which can impact their performance at school, relationships, and overall self-esteem. However, with patience, consistency, and the right strategies, parents can support their child in thriving both academically and emotionally.

some things to keep in mind to help your child with ADHD

1. Educate Yourself About ADHD

Understanding what ADHD is—and what it isn’t—is the first step. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, not a result of poor parenting or a lack of discipline. Read books, attend webinars, and speak with medical professionals to better understand your child’s needs. The more you know, the more confidently you can advocate for your child.

2. Create a Structured Environment

Children with ADHD benefit greatly from routine. Set clear expectations and establish daily schedules that include time for homework, play, meals, and sleep. Visual schedules and checklists can help your child stay on track. Keeping the home environment predictable reduces anxiety and supports focus.

3. Use Positive Reinforcement

Focus on what your child does well and praise effort as much as outcomes. Use rewards and encouragement to reinforce good behavior. For example, earning points for completing tasks can lead to a fun activity or privilege. Consistent positive reinforcement helps children develop self-confidence and motivation.

4. Break Tasks into Manageable Steps

Large tasks can feel overwhelming to a child with ADHD. Break assignments or chores into small, manageable steps and give instructions one at a time. Use timers or alarms to help your child stay focused for short periods, followed by short breaks.

5. Communicate Regularly with Teachers

Stay in touch with your child’s school to monitor academic progress and behavior. Collaborate on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan if needed. These plans provide accommodations like extra time on tests, movement breaks, or help with organization.

6. Encourage Physical Activity

Exercise can be a natural outlet for excess energy and improve concentration. Sports, dance, or simply playing outside can help regulate mood and behavior. Encourage regular physical activity that your child enjoys.

7. Limit Distractions

Create a quiet, organized space for homework and reading. Turn off the TV, mute notifications, and remove unnecessary items from the workspace. Simple changes can help your child concentrate more effectively.

8. Take Care of Yourself

Learning all the ways to help your child with ADHD can be stressful. Make time for your own mental and physical well-being. Join a support group or talk to a counselor if you need someone to talk to. When you take care of yourself, you’re in a better position to support your child. Every child with ADHD is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Patience, flexibility, and a willingness to try different strategies are key. With your guidance and support, your child can learn to manage their ADHD and reach their full potential.
