7 Healthy Ways for Teens to Express Their Feelings to Parents

By: Simrah Wasim, MA, LPC

Are you wanting your teens to express their feelings? Adolescence can be a rollercoaster of emotions—excitement, confusion, frustration, and joy all mixed together. For teens, learning how to navigate these feelings and share them with their parents in a healthy way is a crucial life skill. Open communication not only helps teens feel heard and supported, but it also strengthens the parent-child bond. Here are some healthy ways for teens to express their feelings to their parents.

tips and tricks: help Teens to Express their feelings

1. Pick the Right Time

Timing matters. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to take a moment to collect your thoughts. Choose a calm time to talk—maybe after dinner or during a quiet car ride. Avoid moments when your parents are distracted or stressed, as that can make it harder for them to listen fully.

2. Use “I” Statements

Instead of saying “You never listen to me,” try “I feel unheard when I’m interrupted.” “I” statements are less likely to make your parents defensive and more likely to help them understand your perspective. It shifts the focus from blaming to explaining.

3. Write It Out

Sometimes it’s easier to write down your thoughts than to say them out loud. A letter, a note, or even a text message can be a good way to express feelings clearly without the pressure of face-to-face confrontation. Writing helps you organize your emotions and gives your parents time to absorb what you’re trying to say.

4. Stay Calm and Respectful

It’s okay to be upset—but yelling, slamming doors, or using hurtful words can shut down communication. Try to stay calm and speak respectfully. You’re more likely to be taken seriously and listened to when you express yourself in a composed manner.

5. Ask for What You Need

Sometimes, parents don’t know how to help unless you tell them. If you’re feeling stressed, lonely, or overwhelmed, let them know what would make things better. Do you need space, advice, or just someone to listen? Being clear about your needs helps avoid confusion and frustration.

6. Use Art, Music, or Journaling

Not all feelings need to be shared in words. Drawing, writing music, journaling, or creating art can help you process emotions and may even open the door to a deeper conversation with your parents. Sharing your art with them can also be a powerful way to express what’s going on inside.

7. Be Honest

Honesty builds trust. If you’re struggling with something serious—like anxiety, depression, or school pressure—it’s important to speak up. Parents may not always have the perfect response, but they care and want to help. Being truthful about your feelings allows them to understand you better and support you in the right way.

Expressing feelings isn’t always easy, especially during the teenage years

But developing healthy communication habits early sets the stage for stronger relationships—not just with parents, but with friends, teachers, and future partners. Remember, your feelings are valid, and you deserve to be heard. With patience, practice, and the right approach, sharing them can become a powerful and positive part of your growth.
