If you feel like your teen is struggling with their mental health, lacking social interaction, experiencing difficulty adjusting through life transitions, having a hard time making friends, or just wishing to learn more about mental health and wellness, group therapy may be a fantastic option. The Counseling Center at Cinco Ranch provides teen group therapy to boys and girls seeking to process challenges and relate to others in a safe, stable, and supportive environment. We offer two groups, a Middle School and High School group, to discuss issues many teens experience relating to mood instability, difficult transitions, social and school pressure, behavioral issues, and interpersonal problems. The Co-Ed High School Group aims to bring teens together who struggle with similar challenges. It provides a space for them to connect while acquiring knowledge about relevant teen topics and gaining valuable coping skills. Our group therapy is excellent for those currently in crisis or seeking to gain additional therapeutic benefits. This can be a great supplement to individual therapy!
How Is Group Therapy for Teens Beneficial?
Firstly, group therapy allows teens to feel support from others and learn they are not alone in their experiences. Processing amongst peers allows for a range of perspectives and a chance for teens to feel validated in their feelings. A group is a great way to meet others, bond, and form friendships; it can fill a void where many teens are often feeling lonely. Secondly, adolescents can learn coping skills to regulate difficult emotions and will be taught methods for handling a variety of mental health issues. Teens often leave the group feeling a sense of increased confidence. They have improved communication skills and learned to express feelings. Also, they are grateful for a supportive environment they can rely on for encouragement. This is a great way for teens to improve interpersonal skills and experience connection and support among peers!
Topics We Cover in Teen Group Therapy
The Co-Ed High School Group delves into many topics, including anxiety, depression, coping skills, boundaries, non-suicidal self-injury, suicide awareness, asking for help, self-care, burn-out, mindfulness, relationships, bullying, substance use, social media and pop culture, holiday discussion, and goal setting through creating vision boards. We will discuss social skills and conflict resolution skills, as well as increase our understanding of family and other relationship dynamics. We will work on increasing distress tolerance skills, including how to distract oneself and ways to self-soothe. The group will discuss ways to build and maintain positive relationships with others and especially oneself, as well as work to increase daily self-care and positive experiences. The group is a positive and safe place where teens can learn ways to cope with stress, conflict, relationships, and mood changes.
