Mismatched Libidos: What Every Couple Should Know

One of you wants it more. The other wants it less. Now what?

Mismatched libidos are one of the most common concerns couples bring into therapy. If you’re reading this, chances are you and your partner feel out of sync when it comes to sex—and you’re wondering what that means for your relationship.

The good news? This is completely normal. You’re not broken, and neither is your relationship. Let’s talk about why mismatched desire happens, what to avoid, what you can try, and how therapy might help.

Why Do Mismatched Libidos Happen?

Desire differences are expected in any long-term relationship. Just like we don’t always crave the same food or sleep at the same time, we won’t always want sex in the same way or at the same time.

There are lots of reasons why one partner might want sex more or less often:

  • Stress and burnout: Work, parenting, school, or daily life can drain us. When you’re tired or overwhelmed, sex may feel like another task.
  • Hormones and medications: Birth control, antidepressants, or health issues can impact libido, sometimes without us even realizing it.
  • Relationship dynamics: Feeling emotionally disconnected, unheard, or resentful can make physical closeness harder.
  • Body image and confidence: When we don’t feel good in our own skin, it’s hard to feel sexy or open to intimacy.
  • Trauma or sexual shame: Past experiences (including religious or cultural messages) can affect how we relate to sex now.

No matter the cause, you’re not alone. Mismatched libidos are more common than most people think—and they’re something you can work through.

What NOT to Do When Your Libidos Don’t Match

This issue can bring up a lot of big feelings: frustration, guilt, sadness, and confusion. But there are a few things that can make it harder if you’re not careful.

  • DON’T blame or shame your partner

Saying things like “You never want me” or “You’re too needy” just pushes each other further away. Remember, this isn’t about fault.

  • DON’T make it about being broken

If you’re the one with lower desire, you might think something’s wrong with you. If you’re the one with higher desire, you might feel rejected or unattractive. But desire changes. It doesn’t mean anyone is “too much” or “not enough.”

  • DON’T avoid the conversation

When we stop talking about sex, the disconnection grows. It might feel awkward at first, but it gets easier with practice (and help if you need it).

What Can Help When You Feel Out of Sync

This may feel like a tough issue, but there are ways to reconnect and feel more aligned. A few things that work for many couples:

1. Talk About It Without Blame

Use “I” statements to express how you feel instead of blaming. For example: “I miss feeling close to you” is better than “You never want sex.”

2. Schedule Intimacy

It may sound unromantic, but planning for intimacy can create excitement and help both partners show up more fully. Think of it like planning a date night: it’s something to look forward to, not pressure.

3. Focus on Pleasure, Not Just Intercourse

Intimacy doesn’t have to mean sex every time. Kissing, cuddling, massage, or even just lying together can all build connection.

4. Use a “Yes, No, Maybe” List

This is a fun tool that helps you and your partner explore what you’re open to and what feels off the table. It takes the guesswork out of sex and opens up conversation. Here’s a free one to try.

5. Normalize the Ups and Downs

Desire can change weekly, monthly, or over the years. That’s normal. There’s no “perfect” amount of sex – just what works for your relationship.

When to See a Therapist for Mismatched Libidos

If this issue is creating resentment, anxiety, or emotional distance, couples therapy or sex therapy can help.

In therapy, we create a safe space where both people can talk honestly—without shame or judgment. We’ll explore what’s getting in the way and find ways to reconnect both emotionally and physically.

You don’t have to wait until things feel “bad enough.” Many couples come to therapy because they love each other and want to grow closer.
