Solution Focused Therapy: Benefits, Goals, and Who It Helps
By: Simrah Wasim, MS, LPC, NCC
As a therapist, one of the most common questions I hear is, “What type of therapy is best?” The honest answer is: it depends on you. Different approaches serve different needs. One approach I often use is Solution Focused Therapy (also known as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg). But is it the right fit for you?

What Is Solution Focused Therapy?
Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) is a goal-oriented, future-focused approach. Instead of spending many sessions analyzing the origins of problems, we focus on identifying what you want to be different and how to move toward that change.
In SFT, we ask questions like:
- “What will your life look like when this problem feels more manageable?”
- “When is this issue less intense?”
- “What strengths have helped you get through tough times before?”

The core belief is that you already possess resources and strengths. My role is to help you uncover and use them effectively.
You May Benefit from Solution Focused Therapy If…
- You Prefer a Practical, Forward-Moving Approach
If you don’t feel the need to deeply analyze your childhood or unpack past experiences, SFT may feel refreshing. It’s action-oriented and emphasizes small, achievable steps. Many clients appreciate leaving sessions with something concrete to try. - You Have a Specific Goal
SFT works especially well when you have a clear idea of what you’d like to improve—whether that’s communication in your relationship, managing stress at work, or rebuilding confidence. Because we focus on solutions, therapy can feel structured and purposeful. - You’re Ready to Focus on Strengths
Some people feel drained by repeatedly revisiting painful memories. While we never ignore your struggles, SFT shifts the spotlight toward what’s working—even in small ways. If you’re open to identifying your resilience and past successes, this approach can feel empowering. - You Want Shorter-Term Therapy
Solution Focused Therapy is often brief. While there’s no fixed number of sessions, many clients experience meaningful change in a relatively short period. If you’re looking for targeted support rather than long-term exploratory therapy, this could be a good match.

When It Might Not Be the Best Fit
SFT is not a one-size-fits-all approach. If you feel a strong need to process trauma in depth, explore long-standing patterns, or understand the psychological roots of your struggles, other modalities may be more appropriate—or we may integrate approaches. Therapy isn’t about fitting you into a model; it’s about finding what serves you best.
Additionally, if you’re in acute crisis or experiencing severe mental health symptoms, a more comprehensive or specialized treatment plan may be necessary alongside or instead of SFT.
The Therapeutic Relationship Still Matters
Regardless of the approach, the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of success. Even in a structured, goal-focused model like SFT, empathy, trust, and collaboration remain central. You should feel heard, respected, and supported.
Solution Focused Therapy can be incredibly effective for people who are motivated for change, appreciate structure, and want to build on their existing strengths. It’s hopeful, practical, and empowering.
If you’re curious whether it’s right for you, consider what you want from therapy. Do you want insight, action, or both? In my practice, I often blend approaches—but when a client is ready to focus on solutions and take small, meaningful steps forward, SFT can be a powerful place to start.
