Have you ever wondered what the difference was, if any, between counseling and psychology? Maybe you’ve considered beginning therapy but can’t quite decide whether you want to see a psychologist or a counselor. Well, thankfully, I’ve decided to lay out some key points about differences and similarities in these fields and professions!
What is Psychology? What is Counseling?
Although both counseling and psychology have historically been used interchangeably, there are some key differences between the two. Psychology is known as the study of the mind and behavior. Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, education, career goals, and wellness (ACA, 2023). Another difference is that counselors typically graduate from master’s level programs while psychologists graduate from doctorate programs that are often research-based. Thus, counselors may focus more on general therapy that uses the application of psychologists’ research, evaluation, and diagnostic testing. Additionally, each field has its own professional organization that sets standards for the field such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA).Similarities in Psychologists and Counselors
Both psychologists and counselors are mental health practitioners who can provide psychotherapy and diagnose and treat mental health issues and conditions. They both work to help improve the well-being of their clients. Psychologists and counselors can work in diverse areas such as hospitals, mental health clinics, academic settings, and private practice. In addition, they may specialize in one population or area such as groups, couples, children, or young adults.Emphasis on Pathology Vs. Wellness/Strengths
While both fields are diverse disciplines and are ever-evolving, traditionally, psychologists have learned more about pathology (diagnosis, what needs to be changed/improved), while counselors tend to take a slightly more positive focus. Of course, that’s not to say that psychologists are always looking at the negative! In fact, there’s even a relatively new discipline called “Positive Psychology” that puts heavy emphasis on positive dynamics in our lives! However, counselors often use what is called a “strength-based” perspective that focuses on the existing resources of clients to help them overcome life issues and improve their mental health. Keep in mind, though, that there is considerable overlap between the practices of counselors and psychologists!Key Takeaways
Both counselors and psychologists can provide therapy and work towards improving the lives of others. If you are deciding on whether to choose a psychologist or counselor, you may want to consider the specialization and expertise of each individual professional. You may also want to consider the costs and additional fees of therapy. For example, counselors may have lower fees yet still provide effective therapy. According to verywellmind.com research has found that psychotherapy conducted by a counselor is just as effective as psychotherapy conducted by a psychologist. Moreover, choose the best fit for you. Many professionals even have 15-minute free consultations that can allow you to get a sense of their therapy style and experience and learn more to see if they are the right fit for you.
