Suicidal ideation refers to the thoughts and feelings that someone may have about ending their own life. This complex and distressing experience can stem from a variety of factors, including mental health conditions, overwhelming life circumstances, or feelings of hopelessness and isolation. It’s important to recognize that these thoughts can occur in anyone, regardless of age, background, or life situation.

Do's and Don'ts for Helping Someone with Suicidal Ideation

Supporting someone experiencing suicidal thoughts can be daunting, but your compassion can make a significant difference. Here are some key do's and don’ts to keep in mind.

Do's

  1. Listen Actively: Create a safe space for them to share their feelings. Use open-ended questions and listen without judgment.

  2. Validate Their Feelings: Acknowledge that their feelings are real and important. Avoid minimizing their experiences.

  3. Encourage Professional Help: Gently suggest they reach out to a mental health professional. Offer to help them find resources or accompany them if needed.

  4. Be There: Sometimes, just being present is enough. Offer your company without pressuring them to talk.

  5. Check In Regularly: Consistent support can help. A simple message or call can remind them they are not alone.

Dont's

  1. Don’t Dismiss Their Feelings: Avoid saying things like “It’s not that bad” or “You’ll get over it.” Such comments can make them feel misunderstood.

  2. Don’t Make It About You: Refrain from sharing your own experiences or feelings in a way that shifts the focus away from them.

  3. Don’t Pressure Them: Avoid pushing them to share more than they’re comfortable with. Respect their boundaries.

  4. Don’t Keep Secrets: If someone is at immediate risk, it’s crucial to seek help from professionals or authorities. Their safety is paramount.

  5. Don’t Hesitate to Seek Help: If you’re unsure how to support them or feel overwhelmed, reach out to a mental health professional for guidance.

It's not easy, but…

Supporting someone with suicidal ideation requires sensitivity and understanding. By following these do's and don’ts, you can help create a supportive environment that encourages healing and hope. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers—just being there can make a world of difference.
