Social-emotional learning is gaining more attention throughout the educational system. Social-emotional learning includes activities that enhance children's social, emotional, and communication skills. Overall, a curriculum should be created to enhance children's emotional intelligence and integrate mental health into their daily lives within the school setting.
This places further responsibilities on school counselors and teachers. School Counselors and teachers are expected to follow their academic curriculum in addition to providing social-emotional learning in the classroom. A simple way to open a conversation with students is by completing a Mental Health Check-in Worksheet.
Student Mental Health Check-in Worksheet For School Counselors
The worksheets provided have targeted questions that school counselors can use to assess students' mental health. Additionally, this tool can be used as an introduction to the counselor meeting, used to determine any unmet needs, or used as a classroom activity. The target questions range from check-in on a student's eating and sleep habits to feelings check-in for the week. Depending on the grades you serve as a school counselor, the check-in worksheet you would use would be different to be age-appropriate.How These Worksheets are Intended to Help School Counselors
During my career, I spent over a year at a local charter school in Houston as a school counselor. I have experienced firsthand how vital it is to have a mental health professional on campus. My ultimate goal with these worksheets is to provide foundational social-emotional learning activities that school counselors can use while talking or having a quick check-in with their students. Additionally, I want to provide premade materials that are quick, easy, and fast to use to ease the burden placed on educators. The worksheets are not clinically tested, but I am using my experience and skills to help educators where I can. The Mental Health Check-in worksheets have enough questions to have an open conversation with students in your office. Additionally, they are a great tool to assess the potential needs of the student. School counselors can use their skills by being amazing counselors and educators to bring these worksheets to life and increase social-emotional learning in their schools.
