What Happens in Therapy?

If as an adult you’ve ever wondered, “What happens in therapy?” you’re not alone. Many people are curious (and sometimes nervous) about what therapy actually looks like. The truth is, therapy is simply a space to help you feel better, understand yourself more deeply, and make positive changes in your life with someone trained to support you along the way.

Think of it like this: just as you’d see a doctor when something feels off in your body, a therapist is someone you can talk to when things feel heavy, confusing, or overwhelming emotionally.

6 Common Issues Adults Work On In Therapy:

1. Anxiety and Stress

Life can be a lot. Whether it’s work pressure, parenting, finances, health concerns, or just the general pace of life, many adults feel overwhelmed. Therapy can help you learn tools to manage stress and anxiety, quiet the inner critic, and feel more in control of your day-to-day life.

2. Depression and Low Motivation

Sometimes people come to therapy feeling stuck, sad, or numb and they’re not sure why. Therapy gives you a chance to unpack those feelings, make sense of where they come from, and gently work toward feeling more like yourself again.

3. Relationships

Whether it’s romantic, family, or friendship struggles, relationships can be both our greatest source of joy and our biggest stress. In therapy, you can work through communication issues, boundaries, codependency, past hurts, or patterns you want to break. It’s not about blaming others, it’s about understanding your role in relationships and how to make them healthier.

4. Self-Esteem and Confidence

Many adults struggle quietly with self-doubt, perfectionism, or feeling like they’re never “enough.” Therapy can help you rewrite those inner narratives and build a stronger, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

5. Life Transitions

Big life changes like moving, career shifts, becoming a parent, ending a relationship, and/or losing a loved one can shake us up in unexpected ways. Therapy provides support and stability while you navigate these transitions.

6. Past Trauma

Some people come to therapy to process difficult or traumatic experiences from the past that still impact them today. With care and at your own pace, therapy can help you begin to heal and create a new sense of safety and peace.

What Happens in Therapy? A Safe Space

No matter what brings someone into the therapy room, the heart of it is the same: a space where you can be real, without judgment. Therapy isn’t about fixing you, it’s about supporting you. You are not broken. You may just need help sorting through the noise, making sense of your story, and reconnecting with your values, your goals, and your sense of hope.

And the best part? You don’t have to know exactly what you want to work on before starting. You just have to be open to showing up. From there, you and your therapist can figure it out together.

Therapy is a gift you give yourself, and you are worth it!
