3 Tips for Enjoying Vacations with Your Partner

By: Natasha Cooke, MS, LPC

Do you want to get back to enjoying vacations with your partner? As a couples therapist, I often hear stories of vacations that didn’t feel like vacations at all—arguments on the plane, tension over itineraries, or feeling disconnected in what should be a romantic setting. The truth is, a successful couple’s trip doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intention, communication, and a little flexibility. Here are three therapist-approved ways to actually enjoy your time away with your partner:

Enjoying Vacations With your Partner: Why Vacations Are Important

Vacations offer couples a chance to step away from daily stress and reconnect. With fewer distractions, there’s more space for laughter, meaningful conversation, and shared experiences that deepen your bond.

Tip 1: Align Expectations Before You Go

One of the most common sources of vacation stress is mismatched expectations. One partner envisions lazy beach days, while the other dreams of packing in every museum and excursion. Before your trip, have a clear and honest conversation about what each of you hopes to get out of the experience. Discuss your ideal pace, budget, and any must-do activities. Compromise ahead of time so you both feel heard and can start your trip as a team, not competitors.

Tip 2: Protect Time for Presence, Not Just Plans

Vacations often get overloaded with schedules, which can leave little room for true connection. Prioritize unstructured time where you can simply enjoy each other’s company without an agenda. Whether that’s a slow morning coffee, a sunset walk, or a nap in the hammock—make space for shared stillness. This is when intimacy often deepens, laughter returns, and connection is renewed.

Tip 3: Accept That Imperfection Is Part of the Journey

Even the best-planned trips have hiccups: missed flights, rainy days, or small disagreements. Instead of letting these moments spiral into conflict, use them as opportunities to practice grace and teamwork. Remind yourselves that the goal is not a “perfect” trip—it’s a meaningful one. Sometimes, the most memorable moments are the ones that didn’t go according to plan but brought you closer together anyway.

A vacation isn’t just a break from work—it can be a beautiful reset for your relationship. With intention, flexibility, and care, it becomes more than a getaway; it becomes a way to rediscover each other.
