Couples Fighting Over the Same Thing? Why We Fight the Way We Do
By: Alexandra Faig, M.MFT., LMFT-Associate

Ever wonder why couples fight about the same thing? It is a common reason couples seek therapy. Many loving couples sit in my office and say, “We are going in circles fighting over the same thing, and we do not know how to stop.” If this sounds like you, I want you to know that you are not crazy, and your relationship is not broken. You may be stuck in a pattern.

Whether you are arguing about dishes, laundry, sex, money, or being on your phone, it can feel very surface-level. But, deeper, something bigger is happening. Most fights are not really about the chore or text message. It is about feeling unseen, unheard, and unimportant as a partner. And that hurts.
Couples’ Fighting Patterns: Why Couples Fight About The Same Thing
If you are stuck in a couple’s fighting pattern, you might notice this cycle:

During this cycle you might think “Why won’t they listen?”, “Why am I never enough?”, or “Why do we keep doing this?” When we feel hurt, our body goes into protection mode, which can cause people to fight, shut down, or leave the room. These reactions are not planned. They are automatic.
How to Stop Fighting in a Relationship
The first step to stop fighting in relationships is not better arguing, it is better understanding.
Here are 4 small shifts that can make a big difference:
- Pause before you react
- When you feel yourself starting to get overwhelmed/worked – your heart starts racing or you begin to get louder/defensive. Take a moment to pause and reflect. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling in this moment?” and “What do I need?”
- This allows the pattern to slow down rather than escalate.
- Speak from hurt, not anger
- Instead of saying “You never help me.” Trying using the statement “I feel ____ and I need ____.
- For example, “I feel overwhelmed and alone. I need us to feel like a team.”
- This can feel difficult to do at first but, it takes away blame and invites closeness instead of defensiveness.
- If you shutdown, say so
- If you are the partner that shutdown, let your partner know what is happening.
- Try saying “I want to talk about this but I am feeling overwhelmed. Can we take 5-10 minutes?”
- This lets your partner know that you are not abandoning the conversation. You are protecting it.
- Focus on the pattern, not the person
- It is not you versus your partner.
- It is both of you versus the cycle.

Relationship Counseling for Couples Fighting
During counseling, I help each partner understand the cycle they are caught in and slow this pattern. First, we would indentify what keeps happening and the explore what each partner is feeling underneath the anger. In sessions, we would work on:
- Understanding your conflict style
- Learn how to recognize when you are becoming overwhelmed
- Learn how to calm your body during arguments
- Practice new ways to talk about hurt
- Rebuild emotional safety between each other
With these tools, you will stop seeing each other as the enemy and begin to feel like a team again.

Counseling Can Help!
I have worked with many couples who felt hopeless when they started counseling. But with some support, insight, and tools they learned to understand/hear each other differently. They softened their approach and they reconnected.
If you are tired of fighting, change is possible.
