Do you struggle with trust issues because of your past trauma? Many people who have a history of trauma struggle with trust. This blog can help you understand how trauma can cause trust issues with yourself and others. You will also learn how to rebuild that trust. Let’s jump in!

Trust Issues with Self and Others After Trauma:

    Difficulty Trusting Self

What is often not recognized after trauma is that survivors lose trust in themselves. The survivor blames themselves for some part of the trauma. Examples of this self-blame can be – being in the wrong place at the wrong time, choosing to go on that date, not screaming enough, taking the left turn at the intersection instead of a right turn, and the list goes on and on. This self-blame, while illogical, is still an expected result of trauma and must be addressed in trauma treatment.

There is a fear that if they are ever in a repeat scenario of their traumatic event, they do not trust themselves to make the ‘right’ decision to protect themselves. This self-blame results in the survivor losing trust in their ability to make decisions. This can be small decisions on what to eat for dinner or bigger decisions like what car to buy.

    Difficulty Trusting Others

one way sign downtown, showing indecision or inability to make a decision after trauma, trust issues after trauma blog, counseling center at cinco ranch, 77494

After experiencing a trauma, it is hard to trust the intentions and actions of others. Someone has likely shown you that they are not safe to be trusted even if they were in a position to be trusted. This could be when a person is abused by a family member or friend, a person of authority, or a romantic partner. No matter the exact position, you felt you could be safe with someone and were not. Now you will not allow yourself to go through something like that again, even if that means you view everyone as a potential threat. You may even consider the world as a whole more negatively.

Every time you meet a new person, you assume they are lying or have evil intentions. For every fresh start, you develop an exit strategy. If you start a new job, you already have a resume ready if you do not like it and want to leave. If you create a new relationship, you are starting off preparing for the end of it. When you are walking through a parking lot, you have your keys ready, you are scanning the surroundings, you have a weapon of some sort handy, and someone you trust knows where you are. Some people may argue that they are ‘just being safe.’ No, this is much more damaging and exaggerated than simply being cautious.

    Rebuilding Trust After Trauma:

Now that we understand more of how we struggle with trust after trauma, how do we rebuild it?

    Trust with Small Steps

two people working together, mending trust after trauma, trust issues after trauma blog, counseling center at cinco ranch, 77494

Specifically, with learning to trust yourself and others, take it slow. Trust yourself to follow through on your promise that you will do a load of laundry today. Trust another person with their pledge to take out the trash. Over time, as these smaller promises are fulfilled and trust is proven, then larger promises can be made.

Making Mistakes Can Still Build Trust

Everyone makes mistakes. If you promise yourself that you will do the dishes and you do not do them, do not allow this to be a big deal. If you ask your partner to take out the trash and they do not do it, ask yourself if we can give them grace that they are human. Talk to them about how you felt when they did not do the task and allow them to explain what happened on their end. Chances are it was a mistake. Keep in mind the intention behind a person’s actions. It is more than likely that you or someone else forgot to do the task than they do not care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Counseling

Getting trauma counseling can be scary and overwhelming. Have you wondered what makes counseling for trauma different from ‘regular’ counseling? Well, simply put, a lot. As a therapist who is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, I have noted a few frequently asked questions that may help ease some anxiety about seeking counseling for trauma.

Some Questions I Often Hear About Trauma Counseling

Do I need to see a trauma specialist?

If you feel that your trauma is the most significant issue affecting your life then it is recommended you see a therapist who has specialized training in the area of trauma. Keep in mind that all therapists have had some training to help with trauma so you may not need to see a ‘trauma specialist’. I have explained this to clients like this: Picture the medical field. Counselors are like the primary care physician who is familiar with most everything and trauma therapists are for more specified treatment like a cardiologist who specializes in specific issues with the heart. The most important thing to consider when choosing a therapist is that you feel comfortable and heard!

Two people holding hands in support of one another. Represents the need of trauma counseling in Katy, TX 77494Do I have to talk about my trauma(s)?

As with any counseling, you do not have to do anything! This is especially true with trauma counseling. Trauma counseling is client-led which means you are in charge of how fast paced the treatment goes and what you are comfortable discussing. Also, trauma therapists are trained to help heal from trauma without having you ‘re-live’ your experiences.

    How long will counseling take?

Counseling of any kind is not ‘cookie cutter’. Every client’s treatment plan is unique to their goals and needs. With trauma counseling you can expect to be in weekly counseling sessions for about 4-6 weeks. This time is often used to build skills and learn about how trauma is affecting your life. Typically, around the 4-6 week mark, the therapist and client will discuss progress and possibly go to every other week sessions. By no means is any counseling (specifically trauma counseling) a ‘quick’ process.

If I have trauma, do I have PTSD?

Not necessarily! Everyone has had some form of trauma in their life. Even though everyone has experienced some trauma, not everyone has PTSD. A PTSD diagnosis comes from the client’s inability to heal from the trauma(s) and struggle with long term symptoms that interfere with daily life. There are also other diagnoses for someone struggling with trauma besides PTSD.

How To Help Your Loved One With PTSD

    October 15, 2020
By: Janelle Schlueter, MS, LPC, CCTP

Do you love someone that is experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD? Relationships can often be hard to navigate. When you love someone that struggles with PTSD, “relationship issues” can often take on a whole new meaning.

Three Tips On How To Help Your Loved One With PTSD

Identify and Understand Their TriggersA man using a grounding technique he learned during his therapy session for PTSD

One way to help your partner is to learn how PTSD impacts them. Although there are general criteria for PTSD, the symptoms that an individual experiences is very unique. If your loved one can identify their triggers and make you aware, then that is great. However, sometimes those suffering with PTSD are not aware of triggers or what they experience when triggered. When you help identify triggers or experiences, it not only makes you aware as well, but allows you both to communicate about issues that may arise. Asking questions can be very useful.

    Ask them questions like…

What are some specific triggers they can identify?

What do they experience physically and mentally when they are triggered? How could you recognize this as their loved one (would you see them shaking, rocking, excessively sweating…)?

How can you help them when they get triggered? Do they need medication, to breathe or practice a grounding technique or be left alone?

Is there something that would decrease their level of anxiety on a daily basis?

Two men communicating effectively after their relationship counseling session in Katy, TX that addressed PTSD symptomsEffective Communication

Communication is important in any relationship. However, when you are in a relationship with someone diagnosed with PTSD, communication can be crucial. Extra consideration must be paid to tone, volume, and other unintentionally harmful ways of speaking which may be triggering.

It is also important that you choose an appropriate time to have a serious discussion. Let your partner know that you need to have a discussion and set a time that works for you both. It is best to wait until your loved one is not highly anxious or coping with a trigger before trying to accomplish serious concerns. Identifying when you or your partner are flooded and needing a break in communication is also helpful.

Create a “Safe” SpaceA woman relaxing on her patio where she created her safe space

A person suffering from PTSD rarely feels safe. Most people can say they feel safe at home, but that is not always the case for someone with PTSD. For your loved one, it is important that they have a “safe” space. “Safe” means no physical danger, but it also means emotionally safe. Take time with your partner to identify where or what they need to feel safe. For example, some people can feel more safe as long as their backs are not to the door in a social setting. For others, they may need new locks or the room re-painted. Again, every individual experiencing PTSD is different and their needs will be unique to their trauma.

Furthermore, feeling “safe” is also creating some predictability or routines. When things are predictable, they are not as likely to cause an increase in stress.

Therapy Can Help You and Your Partner With PTSD

When you love and care for someone with PTSD the stress can be overwhelming for you as well. A counselor can help you with identifying and implementing healthy boundaries, effective communication, and self-care strategies.

Sometimes loving someone with PTSD can be a struggle. There are support groups for those who love people with PTSD which may help in reassuring you that you are not alone.

Hopefully your loved one has seen or is currently seeing a counselor who specializes in PTSD. If not, encourage them to seek help as well. If the relationship between you and your loved one is struggling due to what you believe is a factor of PTSD, seek a couples counselor.

Above all, treat yourself and your loved one with love and respect.

    Surprisingly Helpful Tips for PTSD

If you have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) you are probably already aware that PTSD results in severe and even debilitating anxiety. What many people don’t know is that with PTSD there is an underlying feeling of uncertainty and fear. This uncertainty and fear results in being in a constant state of alert and experiencing an exaggerated startle response (easily scared). Part of Trauma Informed Therapy involves finding “self-care” strategies that can address the fear and uncertainty as well as the anxiety. A woman that experienced a trauma and is uncertain of her future

You Can Make Simple Changes to Decrease Your PTSD Symptoms

Keep in mind that those with PTSD typically feel a heightened level of worry at all times. It is one of the goals of Trauma Informed Therapy that we take steps to lessen the overall level of uncertainty.

    Follow a Routine

If you have PTSD, routines will be your new favorite thing! Creating a routine that you follow will help your brain and body learn that basic needs will be met. For example, you can go to bed at the same time each night, wake up at the same time each morning and eat around the same time each day. The body and brain begin to relax because it knows that these basic needs are being consistently met. Fear and uncertainty regarding the body’s basic needs is something that happens subconsciously, meaning you most likely do not know you are even experiencing this fear – but your brain and body show the effects that you are (the increase in PTSD symptoms). Most clients feel a significant decrease in PTSD symptoms in a few days to a couple weeks.

A man that has experienced PTSD that has tidied up his workspace to help ease anxiety symptomsTidy Up

“If you see clutter, you feel clutter.”

If your home is cluttered, it is too much for the brain to absorb when you are simply looking around. Your brain is trying to recognize all the different colors, patterns, shapes, and so forth. It is difficult to find the energy to clean and organize so take it step by step, room by room, and begin with the rooms you spend most of your time. The goal is to limit the amount of things you see.

    Limit Social Media/News

When you have a constant heightened level of fear, exposure to social media and news sources can make it worse. Social media allows you to connect with friends, see humorous postings and follow topics that interests you. However, it also increases unhealthy thinking, such as comparing yourself to others and seeing political or news comments that cause you to become angry or sad. This results in feeling helpless and can increase symptoms of anxiety. Try a several day social media and news cleanse and see if your PTSD symptoms improve.
